Front Cover Flat Plan

For the flat plan of the front cover of my magazine I decided to use a medium close up shot of my model, I chose to make her in the centre of the page but slightly to the right as most of the text I wanted on the magazine such as cover lines was going to be on the left hand side of the page. I decided to use a model with big blonde curly hair as I thought that this related to the disco era, I also chose to put a pink sparkly top on the model as glitter and sparkles was a big thing in Disco, the bright pink would also draw in my audience of teenage girls.
I added the name of my magazine 'MISCO' at the top of the page aligned to the left, I made it bold and black to stand out, I also put a pink background behind the text to match the models top.
Underneath the name of the magazine I added my tagline 'Bringing Disco Back...'', I put the main cover line underneath that and added other cover lines underneath that too.
On the top of the right hand side of the page next to the title I added a yellow banner across the corner, this was to tell the reader this was the first issue of the magazine, I made the banner the same colour as the models hair so that the magazine would have a consistent house style.
Further down the right side of the page i included another cover line about an 'Exclusive interview', I added a picture underneath of the band that the exclusive interview was with, I made a pink boarder round the picture to match with the top of the model and the background at the top of the page.
At the bottom of the page I included a circular 'puff' which tells the reader they can win free roller blades (I meant to put roller skates).
Finally at the very bottom of the page i included a strip in which it says 'DON'T MISS OUT ON THE LATEST DISCO NEWS', I then included the Facebook, Twitter and 'MISCO' logo, I included this to make it look as if 'MISCO' has a Facebook, twitter and its own website that they can look up on the internet to find more information and news.

Risk Assessment

My photo shoot will be held in school, it will be held in a classroom. There will be a table for me to stand or sit on to take photographs and a white screen/sheet clipped to the wall behind the model, when taking these photos some risks will be involved. I created this Risk Assessment to show the possible risks which could take place while taking my photos and the ways in which I could and will prevent them from happening.

Researching Disco

When researching my chosen genre (Disco) I noticed a few things, when looking up 'Disco' the 1970's appeared regularly. It seemed disco was a thing of the past with an outdated look and no recent music being produced. Disco seemed dead, unwanted by the public any longer, I was put off choosing disco by this point and thought if I were to make this disco magazine it wouldn't appeal to the public of today! Further into my research I noticed the fashion of disco such as disco pants, scrunchies, glittery items, big hair, clashing patterns and bright colours were rapidly coming back into fashion! Huge brands such as Urban Outfitters, Topshop, River Island, Primark and many more are selling these disco related items making the fashion of disco known to different generations. This showed to me disco wasn't completely dead and in fact becoming something cool and retro rather than outdated and something embarrassing that only your parents or grandparents would know about! I decided to look on the Urban Outfitters website which is a popular clothing brand with a main target audience of teenagers, I typed 'Disco' into the search bar, this produced clothing and accessories such as 'Roller disco leggings' and various 'Disco sunglasses', this showed me that disco was definitely in fashion today. When looking through a magazine aimed for teenage girls and young woman I discovered a picture of 'Rihannah', a well known pop artist known for inspiring young girls and being a fashion icon, she was spotted wearing a disco sequin top and holographic shoes and bag, furthermore showing the fashion of disco becoming more popular!

The problem now was that the magazine I am going to create has to be a music one, not fashion so I decided to do more research into the music aspects of Disco. After some research I came across Madonna, a more recent artist who had produced an album called 'Confessions on a dance floor', this was a perfect example of more recent types of disco music. I soon realised that Disco hadn't died, it had just changed throughout the years, I noticed aspects of disco such as highly synthesised sounds are in a lot of music today that we wouldn't class as 'disco music'. Other genres of music have borrowed aspects of disco such as a lot of pop music is now dance music which includes many aspects of disco in them. I also found that disco music is still played on radios today as it is 'feel good music' which has an aspect of fun making people want to get up and dance, songs like 'Chick - Le Freak' are played and 'The trammps - Disco Inferno' are still popular. Overall I realised if I was going to make a disco magazine that would appeal to the public today it would have to be for teenagers or young adults due to the age ranges that the fashion and pop industries aim their products and music to.

Disco mood board blog

http://florencebethanymayo.tumblr.com/

Please click on the link above to view the mood board blog I created using a website called 'Tumblr'. The website allowed me to search for words such as 'Disco' or '70s', by doing so it produced a different selection of pictures and animations relating to the words I had previously searched for. I was able to view a selection of related pictures to my searches as well as being able to 're-blog' them, meaning they would appear on my blog. I searched for things such as 'Disco', '70s', 'roller skates' and 'disco fashion', I also did some research on disco artists in the 70s, I discovered a popular band called the 'Bee Gees'. After finding this popular band I decided to search them on Tumblr which lead me to more pictures relating to Disco in the 70's. To make my blog look more interesting I changed the layout, fonts, colours and picture order of my blog.

Disco music magazine name survey

Disco music magazine name survey

I created this survey to find out which name I should use for my music magazine. I asked 10 people of the same age range (15-17) which name they preferred for a new disco music magazine out of Misco, La-isco or Funk.

Audience Profile

Audience Profile
Hannah is a 16-year-old girl who enjoys going out with her friends to social events including concerts and raves. Hannah is open to new types of music but loves anything upbeat.  A disco magazine would be perfect to Hannah because it will keep her up to date with the newest disco music on the market for her to impress her friends with, it would also educate her on the older types of disco music which are rapidly coming back into the music industry.
